On Tai Estate

Innovative Architecture Turning An Abandoned Quarry Into A Vibrant Community
On Tai Estate
20 On Sau Road, Kwun Tong
in mobile
The former Anderson Road Quarry was once a major source of quarry materials. After the quarry was abandoned, the site was transformed into On Tai Estate providing homes for over 25,000 people.

On Tai Estate is a green and sustainable community built with innovative design and planning techniques, excellent environmental ideas and a mix of historical and artistic features. The estate has won numerous architectural and management awards.

Features
Innovative & Meticulous Design
We undertook a number of detailed microclimate studies to improve the building design. The colouring pattern for the elevations of the domestic blocks was designed according to the thermal study which minimizes the solar heat gain on the building facade. The colours of the building facade are arranged in a high-low sequence, echoing the topography of the mountains in the backdrop.
Rich History & Artistic Culture
We worked hand in hand with the community and artists to create a community art installation using quarry machinery and handicraft to evoke the history of the quarry.
A geo-heritage plaza, exhibition gallery and outdoor education area are available for visitors to learn about the quarry’s landscape, rocks, precious natural resources and the history and culture of the quarry.
Green & Sustainable Community
The estate has been infused with modern living elements, including a water-saving zero-irrigation system, pilot application of robotics, five-dimensional building information modelling technology, and comprehensive greening installations to create a green and sustainable community.
The estate has a greening ratio of over 30%, involving 80,000 plants, half of which are native to Hong Kong.
